Description:
A chance to photograph the incredible landscape of the Isle of Skye, Scotland. We will take in various locations for sunrise and sunset potential (sunrise and sunset not guaranteed!). I've photographed on Skye many, many times over the years, and it is a place you simply can’t get bored of!
From the ‘Old Man of Storr’, the Fairy pools (I’ve had a dip in here in mid summer…still absolutely freezing water!), Sligachan with waterfalls a plenty. The rugged Cullin mountains provide a wonderful backdrop to photos.
With a mix of composition and technical tips there is a good variety throughout the day. Being in a small group you have plenty of opportunity to ask questions.
Sunrise is around 7:30am and sunset is around 4:45pm so weather permitting we will aim to get both when we can. We will start at 10am on day 1, which gives people who travel the day before a slightly easier start.
A selection of likely locations is below, but this is completely subject to change dependent on the weather. I am in Scotland in August and then prior to the workshop so will scout out the best locations for the conditions.
Below is a list of likely locations we will be visiting. This may change according to the conditions.
Sligachan - bridge and waterfalls
Eileen Dolan Castle (sunset) - on mainland
Old Man of Storr (sunrise)
Eas a’ Bhradain waterfall
Tallisker Bay
Rha waterfall
Brides Veil Waterfall
Elgol (sunset)
Fairy Pools
Fairy Glen
Neist Point lighthouse
Duntulm Castle
Who it is suitable for:
Photographers of all ability, from beginners to more advanced (not suitable for mobile phone photographers). A reasonable level of fitness is required as there will be some walking (uphill) to and from locations.
What to bring:
Camera - Spare battery can be useful when using your camera a lot in the cold.
Lenses - A range of focal lengths will be useful, from wide angle to telephoto.
Tripod - If you have one, some are available to borrow if needed.
Cable release - Not essential, but useful if you have one.
Filters - Not essential, but useful if you have them.

Weather and what to wear:
The weather on Skye is very changeable. They say if you stand still long enough you can get all four seasons in one day! Bring waterproofs for both you and your camera. Sturdy footwear is strongly advised, the ground is often uneven.  The prolific Midges should be done for the year, I will have ‘Smidge’ repellent with me just in case!
Food:
Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided throughout the workshops.
Not included:
Accommodation, Food, Personal insurance, camera insurance, travel insurance and travel (to, from or during the workshop). Some travel/lift sharing to locations may be possible but is not guaranteed.
This workshop cost is for tuition and the workshops, it does not include accommodation or food. This leaves you free to book the accommodation you would like to suit your budget, be it camping, camper van, cottage, B&B, hotel etc. There may be potential for lift sharing between workshop locations (not guaranteed) for those wishing to travel by plane/train/bus to the area. Please do get in touch to discuss this possibility.
Getting there:
There are flights to either Glasgow, Edinburgh or Inverness. There is car hire at the airport.
There is no train station on Skye.
Camping, camper van, caravan - there are various campsites. Wild camping is permitted on Skye so you could pitch where you like if you are self sufficient.
There may be an option to lift share with other participants for the journey up to share the cost. If you are interested in this option I can put you in touch with others who are interested.

If you have any questions regarding this workshop, or would like to book a place, please do get in touch.
